First SMS

This is the first SMS that i received from Dadu when he got his own mobile on 26.09.2010..

I slept and dreamed that life was beauty,
I woke and found that life was duty.

...absolutely true to his nature...defines him perfectly..

ECONOMICALLY SPEAKING

Note: I was made to read this article by Dadu so that i pursue with Economics for higher studies.

First things first. Why study Economics anyways?
Well for starters because you have to study something that will give you a remote chance at a great career or perhaps because you enjoy making simple things complicated. Jokes apart a very sound reason to be the fact that everyhting in life relates to it in some way or the other. The field is vast and accordingly there are opportunities galore. Another plausible reason could be that you want to chalk out the destiny of the nation and the world, because economics goes into virtually every kind of planning.
In fact everything in life somehow relates to it. And that is why the subject has gained such diverse dimensions over the years. Now economics is associated with virtually every subject. You have sports economics, Bio- economics, economic psychology, economic sociology, institutional economics and economic geography.
More countries are headed by economists than by any other professional. Our own country is one!
Go ahead and take the plunge. Who knows you may become the next Manmohan Singh or Amartya Sen. As a matter of fact it is one of the very few subjects that make you eligible for a Nobel. Isn't that a good enough reason?

Instigation

Note: This speech was given by my grandfather, Mr. Birendra Nath Dutt, on the 30th of May, 1970, at USIS, Public Speaking Contest, Tollygunge Club.

Mankind is afraid of ferocious animals, lions, tigers. But is it not the treacherous snakes dreadful of all. Why so?

Adam and Eve lived happily a peaceful life in the garden of Eden. But Satan envious of their happiness sent serpent to instigate Eve against God. Thus the mankind is robbed the joy of innocense. Since then the instinct of instigation is working havoc and destroying peace of many a life. Many a kingdom has been perished, many a dynasty has been ruined owning to the insticnt of instigation.

Ramayana and Mahabharata tell us the same tale. Rama would not have suffered the misery of exile had there been no Manthara to instigate Kaykeyee. Ravana, the king of Lanka, who had no malice against Rama, who never dreamt of stealing Sita, became victim of instigation of his sister Surpanakha.

Pandavas, in the Mahabharata would not have suffered so much sorrow and humiliation had there been no Sakuni to incite the Kauravas against the Pandavas.

If we peep into the continental literature we find the two greatest tragedies of Shakespearre - Macbeth and Othelo are built on the same story of instigation. "Look like an innocent and be the serpent under you" said Lady Macbeth to instigate her husband for murdering the King and the murder was committed.

Diago's instigation caused the hands of Othelo throttled Desdemona his swetheart and also ultimately killing himself.

In our day today's life, if we analyse we will find in most of wrong or harm done in society, in most of the unhappiness or mischief caused in the families - in the background we will find some influence of instigation.

In our Shastras (religious scripture) Kama (desire), Krodha (anger), Lova (greed), Moha (affection), Mada (ego), Matsarya (envy) are the six evil insitincts. These are all inner instincts, one can guard himself against these by wisdom and intellectuality. But instigation is an external instinct-which has its origin in some others.

Instigation acts in a peculiar way. Neither the person who is instigated nor the person who instigates can feel the presence or influence of it.

Did Kaykeyee think that she was falling to be a victim of instigation by Manthara? Did Othelo realize and feel he was becoming a victim of falsehood by Diago, in the name of friendship and loyalty to him?

THe soft hearted Kaykeyee, the vastly learned and great Warrior Ravana, the royal-commander-in-chief Macbeth, love blind Othelo, none could escape the grip of instigation.

Ladies and Gentelman, Lions and Tigers can do harm when you go near them. But the treacherous Snake can be anywhere, even in the very bed where you wish to spend the carefree night. Instigation is the serpent of life.
